We leave Cusco very early in one of our specially equipped vehicles. We pass through picturesque valleys inhabited by farming communities. At mid morning we visit the pre-Inca tombs of Ninamarca, known as the “Chullpas” before arriving in Paucartambo, a traditional town, which due to its importance in the colonial period retains much of the flavor. As we continue we ascend to the Acjanacu peak at 3,850 meters from which we then descend through the cloud forest, an area rich in endemic species, such as the spectacled bear and rock cockerel, orchids, DROMELIAS, ELECHOS amongst others. We spend the night at our San Pedro Inn.

Very early we get the chance to see the courtship dance of the rock cockerel, the Peruvian national bird which possesses a bright red - orange plumage. After breakfast we continue our bus journey through high lying jungle to Pilcopata* to Atalaya port situated on the banks of the Madre de Dios River at an altitude of 700 meters where we start a 15 minute descent down to the river. We can see an enormous diversity of birds such as heron……. Etc. as we make our way to our private reserve “Erica” where we trek along trails between the high and low lying jungle. Overnight at the lodge.

- 1 Optional Descent on mountain bike from San Pedro Lodge (1,700 meters) in the cloud forest to Pilcopata (700 meters) high lying jungle.
- 2 Optional from Pilcopata kayak trip (class II and III) of between 1 ½ and 3 hours down the Koshnipata and Madre de Dios Rivers passing the spectacular Koneq ford. Along the way we enjoy some beautiful scenery and a swim in the crystal waters. We continue until we arrive at the lodge.

We depart once again in our boat along the Madre de Dios River toward the Boca Manu aerodrome (optional flight Cusco-Boca Manu- 45 mins, it may be possible to join a group traveling over land) At Boca Manu there is a chance to buy last minute provisions and cold drinks before we set sail down the Manu River in the reserve zone. We camp overnight on a beach with white sand. Around the camp are several trails where we can observe many insects, birds, monkeys etc.

Early we stop briefly at the Limonal checkpoint where we must present the necessary documents to enter the reserve. We continue upstream along the Manu River toward the Salvador trail where we spend the next two nights at our base camp that has kitchen, toilet and shower facilities as well as radio communication. The wildlife is abundant and we will see countless species of animals either sunbathing on the beaches or feeding in the surrounding trees. Early in the afternoon we trek through the pristine jungle and around Lake Salvador in search of wildlife until nightfall. In the evening there is the option of a walk near to the camp and also to go out on a catamaran; by flash light we will be able to see black caiman out hunting their prey.

Early on we get the chance to visit Cocha Salvador once again on the catamaran, we will see fauna such as the giant otter (a species in danger of extinction) fishing, playing and swimming. Also present is the black caiman, hoatzin, spider monkey and beautiful flora. We then return to camp where we enjoy a delicious breakfast followed by a four hour trek through primary jungle to a lake known as Cocha Otorongo. Here we find a 15 meter observation tower from which we can enjoy the jungle scenery and perhaps observe the resident giant otter family.

We set sail on our boat down the Manu River to Boca Manu, a small community located at the juncture of the Manu and Alto Madre de Dios Rivers. From this point on the river becomes Madre de Dios River which is the hydrographical axis of the department of Madre de Dios. After around four hours we arrive at the Blanquillo private reserve where we walk several interesting trails. We spend the night camping on the beach.

Early on, before breakfast, from a hidden observation point we observe the parrots and macaws feeding at the clay lick or ‘collpa’. The minerals they extract form an important part of their balanced diet. The parakeets, Amazon parrot with blue heads form an unforgettable spectacle of colorful wildlife. We then head back along the Madre de Dios River to Boca Manu airport where there is the option of a flight back to Cusco, otherwise we continue up the Alto Madre de Dios River spending the night camping on the beach.

We continue down the river until we reach Atalaya port from where we catch our bus back to Cusco arriving late at night or very early the following day.
