The Cajamarca Carnival
Cajamarca is a department located in the northern mountains of Peru. It is well known for its carnival and its famous songs with their unmistakable melodies and amusing lyrics. The improvised ballads contain some rude yet affectionate verses and are delivered in harmony.
From ten in the morning to well into the afternoon on the Sunday of the carnival the chorus echoes around the city as the Momo King and his band of followers dance and sing in the streets. In the evenings the masked dances, the night of the queens, with palms, cortamontes and cuyadas they provide entertainment into the early hours. The carnival is a rich cultural and traditional expression illustrated by the competition between the five districts of the city who prepare all year for the musical contest.
The villages from the region exhibit the products that have made them famous: wine from Cascas, hydrangeas from Chugar, cherimoyas from Cunish, guitars from Namora, limes and oranges from Coyna, traditional healers from Corisogorna and the superb hats from Celendin and Asuncion.
The culmination of the festival is the entrance of the Lord of the carnival who descends into the city accompanied by his gang of followers who sing traditional as well as some more modern songs.
The festival is characterized by the masquerading of clowns.
